Perry Mason Mystery: The Case of the Baited Hook by Erle Stanley Gardner

Rating – 8 / 10

Till now, I have read very few books which fall into the category of pulp fiction. My approach towards reading such books is unique in its own way. I start off with the first fifty pages of any book and as soon as the plot and the characters become clear to me, I tend to fall back to the last ten pages of the book. That is, I can’t wait to know who the killer/culprit is and this attitude mostly ruins my interest in the book. And the most interesting thing about this habit is that I continue doing it, even after completely understanding the consequences. I did the similar thing here but this time I stopped myself a little bit so I didn’t come to know the killer although I did come to know the person who was closely involved with killer.
This book was a great read and was absolutely gripping. Although, there are moments when you feel – “How did Perry Mason figure that out?” because there are absolutely no clues in that direction and that is a fault of the author who failed in making Mason appear to be human. Mason seems to have some super-human ability when it comes to figuring the events at the time of the murder and his so-called-hunches always seem to be correct. Having read a few of the Mason mysteries before, I found this book pretty good and up to the standards of a good mystery novel.
