The Giver by Lois Lowry

Rating – 8 / 10
The Giver is the story of a Jonas, who is awaiting his ceremony of Twelve and is going to given an occupation by the elders if the society. This society is based in the future and is considered as a utopia. This society has eliminated pain and suffering by converting to sameness. Jonas is selected to be the next Receiver in Memory and is supposed to receive memories of the times when everything was not same, from the Giver.
Everything in this future society is surrounded by strange rules and if anybody disobeys these rules, he is released. It is later learnt that being released actually signifies killing the person and Jonas father and Fiona, the girl he likes, are also involved in all these killings. This part was the turning point of the book, when all of sudden Lowry unleashes the actual plot of the story, and makes the reader realize that such a society can never exist in reality. From this time onwards, Jonas decides to run off from such a society and its neighboring similar societies. The Giver completely understands the situation and helps Jonas to run away with a baby Gabriel, who is soon going to be released. Needless to say, that he is successful and finds a new place to live, called the Village.
The story was very touching and the plot was wonderfully gripping. The fact that the people of this society have become so accustomed to sameness, that they cant even see colors or hear any music, is extremely unbelievable. The Giver is a direct attack on those who propagate that final balance in the society can be achieved, by clearly depicting that even if it is achieved, it will have its own flaws.
